EF 24-105 f4 L IS USM or EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM?

Going back and forth on this one - so any help / comments would be much appreciated!

The lens is for a 550d, so crop sensor, which means the 17-55 might be a better bet. However I have been using an old EF 24-80 from film Canon days and like the extra reach.

I mainly take landscapes and travel - so the wider angle of the 17-55 should be better on the 550d. But the odd portrait may favour the longer reach of the 24-105. I've no intention of moving to FF at anytime so I guess my decision needs to be based on what focal lengths I favour.

... eventually a 70-200 f4L when money allows. At the moment I've got a Sigma 55-200 which will do for now.
 
What about the 15-85? gives you the same kind of reach at the tele end and a good deal extra at the wide end.
 
The 17-55 is a fantastic lens, but if you want to save a bundle and get something just as sharp and are not really fussed about the IS then look at the Tamron 17-50. If you want IS (VC) then look for a later one, but they do cost more!
 
If u want the width and a bit of extra reach then I recommend the EF-S 15-85. Great lens. :thumbs: :thumbs:

I sold my 24-105 to get one and IMHO the 15-85 is a much better lens on a croppie than the 24-105.
 
I have the 17-55mm on a 40D and I love it. I find 17mm is perfectly wide enough for what I shoot and 55mm is just about long enough though I am looking to add another lens to take care of 70-200mm.
 
Forgot to add I had a 24-105 for some time and while it's a very nice lens, 24mm wasn't wide enough for me.
 
Thanks everyone for your comments. After lots more reading and research I'm going to get the 17-55 f2.8 as I think the wider angle on the 550d will be better for the majority of what I shoot - I.e. Mainly landscapes. Just need to save a bit more to replace my 55-200 siggy to give me a bit more range at the tele end.
 
Gulp. Just ordered the 17-55! Looking forward to trying it out on a trip to Pembrokeshire in a couple of weeks time!
