EF 400 mm f/5.6L USM length

hi guys, i've found that the max length (dimensions) is 266mm

but that's with the hood extended

could someone tell me how long the lens is with the hood retracted........need to know the length to see if it'll fit in my bag

Now that's weird....mines spot on 280mm with both caps on !

Not sure where 216mm comes from though.

Mine is 275 with uvfilter have you got a polariser on yours Bob as that would be a little more?

No filter at all...I don't use them routinely.

my bad - wrong lens

thought he was after the EF 100 - 400mm F/4.5 - 5.6L IS USM hence the size differences

say it's 296mm max length (source canon link above) does that mean the hood only overlaps 16mm if the lens is 280mm retracted? or is it longer - seems strange

My measurements are with the hood fully retracted (it retracts beyond the front element to aid removal of the lens cap.
