Anyone using this combination? I'm getting a 70-200 shortly and I'm wondering whether to get a 2x teleconverter and ditching my 100-400. I'm not using the 100-400 a great deal and it would free up some space in my bag and give me a bit more cash to blow on another lens.

Just had a look at canons site and noted the the series III teleconverters are also weather sealed so that would give me a weather sealed 140-400 f/5.6 lens which is another plus.

I think I'll be selling my 2x II converter soon, so let me know if you want a minter......

but to answer your question.

The 70-200 MKII + 2X II is a very good combination. I sold my 400 f/5.6 as I wasn't using it much, and instead got the 2x converter and it does admirably well. I very very rarely need longer focal lengths than 200mm which is why I may sell soon.

Here is a shot and a crop of the same - handheld at 1/30 sec (f/6.3)!!!! (Taken @ 400mm)

Cheers Phil. Looks like it's the way forward. I've had some cracking pictures with my 100-400 but my bag is already full and if I can get the same results and get the 2.8 lens that I want I'll be happy.

I know the mkiii is supposed to be awesome with the 70 200 mkii but is it worth the almost double cost over the mkii?
 
I think it's a very do-able combo, and when you think that it can replace two lenses, a very appealing/afforable one too.

Just guessing here, but I think that's what Canon intended by releasing the 70-200 Mk2 and new extenders instead of upgrading the old 100-400L. Check out the sharpness tests on www.the-digital-picture.com You can compare all combinations of lenses, including Mk2 and Mk3 extenders.

It also seems that the MkIII isn't available at the moment so I'll probably go for the MkII and possibly upgrade to the MKIII when it comes available.

Cheers Richard. That makes sense as you'd have thought that Canon would have released a MKII of the 100-400 by now as it's such a good seller. Perhaps it's not that easy to upgrade the weather sealing of the push pull mechanism.

As the 100-400 is f/5.6 at the 400 end surely it will be the same as I'm used to. The important factor for me is retaining AF as my eyesight isn't what it used to be. It tends to take a second or 2 for my eyes to correctly refocus and by that time I've missed the shot.
