EFS 17-85mm IS USM 4-5.6 or EFS 18-135mm IS 3.5-5.6

Hi ,

I'm looking into buying the Canon 60D but having an issue deciding which kit lens to go with.

The options are the 17-85mm 4-5.6 is usm or the 18-135mm 3.5-5.6

The main thing I am looking for in the lens is wide angle which both are .. But I can't make sense of the whether the 17-85 USM would be better than the 18-135 (not USM) bearing in mind that the 18-135 has an f-stop of 3.5 in comparison to the 17-85, with f4.

The pack with 18-135 lens is going for £999 and the 17-85 is £1039 so not much of a price difference between those two.. And buying the lens separately the price difference is only around £50 ..

I already have a sigma 24-70mm f2.8 , canon 18-55 kit lens, canon 70-300 f4 and canon 55-250 f4 and canon 50mm f1.8.

My question now is which of the 2 packages would be the best one to go for in terms of the quality of the lens and regarding the lenses I already have.

I was quite keen on the 17-85 but already have a 24-70 which falls in the same category I would think.. So possibly better to go for the 18-135 which would give me a greater zoom than my sigma lens..???

Or maybe is there any other lens I could go for which could slot in to my kit bag?

I owned the 17-85mm but the aperture blades began sticking due to a common fault with a flex cable in the aperture assembly, so I bought the 18-135mm as a replacement and I prefer it as the focal range is more useful and the image stabilizer is 4 stop rather than the 3 stop on the older lens. However if you feel you need more on the wide angle end then I think its worth looking for a deal with the 15-85mm which is superior to both these lenses.

I wouldn't bother with either of these lenses. 17mm or 18mm at the wide end is around 27mm - 29mm equivalent, which is wide but not very wide. Why not look for something in the 10 - 20mm range or thereabouts?
