Had an email from Apple a few weeks ago inviting me to try out the new OS X. I know its only just over a week away from release but I thought I might give it a try. Anyone else using the GM Candidate?

If I where you I would wait and see what bugs are flagged. I've learnt the hard way not to be too eager for the latest release, don't be their guinnie pig.

I set it to download last night on our MacBook Air. I will install it tonight, but I need to make mine a fresh install as I have other plans for our laptop.

I've had El Capitan beta for a few months and installed the GM candidate last week. Nothing but smooth sailing all the way. I don't remember any issues after about the third beta version, and that was a problem with wireless connections dropping out.

My printers; Canon Pro 9000 and Epson 7525 Workforce and Canon Selphy 910 all seems to be working perfectly.

Been really busy this last week and not had chance to install yet, will probably do so tomorrow, I know its only a few days to the general release, but it beats the mad rush on release day :)

Does anyone know if you need Yosemite on your computer before you can download EL Capitan?

I upgraded back when the Beta first came out, then decided I didn't like it and reverted back to Yosemite. I have now reinstalled the Beta and it's working much better heading up to the official release next week.

Quoted from CNET (here):
"… if you haven't updated your Mac's operating system in a number of years, then you need to check to see if you are running at least OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, which was released way back in 2009. Its 10.6.6 update introduced the Mac App Store, which you'll need in order to download El Capitan. You need be running one of the following:

  • OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8)
  • OS X Lion (10.7)
  • OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)
  • OS X Mavericks (10.9)
  • OS X Yosemite (10.10)
If you have an ancient Mac with an OS predating Snow Leopard, you will need to install Snow Leopard before then moving to Yosemite."

HTH (y)

Edit - think that last sentence is a typo, in that you should be able to go from Snow Leopard > El Capitan, rather than needing to install Yosemite.

I am still running Lion, so hopefully I can go straight to El Capitan as I do have access to the Mac App Store on my machine currently (which seems to be the prerequisite)

Thanks, Tony. I stuck with Mavericks 10,9,5 and didn't bother with Yosemite, but I think I shall give EL Capitan a couple weeks after launch and then try it. I have been very happy with the performance of my machine.

I've been using El Capitan since the public beta, it has been very stable. As with all major upgrades, make sure you have a backup and check compatibility of any specialist software or hardware you may be using. I found out the hard way that my old Wacom tablet doesn't work with Yosemite.

I've just updated and Lightroom 2015 and PS 2015 all work fine....

I was just about to upgrade to Yosemite.

Is there anything in El Capitan that is actually useful? The feature list looks, um, poor.....

notes bit is nicer, but yeah its not like windows 10 lol

I think for me ios9 has a bit faster wifi connection El Capitan downloaded not yet installed only really going to upgrade in hope Yosemite wifi issue is solved

Yosemite saw the introduction of a new wireless connection daemon called discoveryd. It was replaced in 10.10.4 with its predecessor mDNSResponder. This should have resolved most of your wireless issues. El Capitan also continues to use mDNSResponder.

Wireless issues are also sometimes fixed by creating a new location (in Network Preferences) or by completely removing all the wireless settings (instructions available on request).
Another troubleshooting step is to reset the NVRAM (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063).
