Why does Elements 11 not recognise RAW files from my Nikon D5300.....???

Have you updated your ACR?

Unfortunately that won't help as the D5300 needs ACR 8.3:

and Elements 11 only supports up to 7.1:

No, Elements 11 comes with 7.1 but supports up to 8.0. Same result but not quite as wide a mismatch.......

How about converting to DNG? That's what I do with my unsupported cameras.

Should do exactly what's required. The stand-alone DNG convertor is a very handy tool.
