#1 We arrived at this waterhole just as the elephants arrived too.

#2 Then we spotted the lions. So did the elephants. These 2 were put on guard watch while the others drank from the waterhole. The lions weren't interested, but the ellies were nervous

#3 Movement - something's going on over there

#5 This is the 2nd lioness - trotting. There is obviously something going on. We couldn't see what was causing them to move so quickly. But lions don't go anywhere for no reason.

#6 Aha - there's a kill. We missed it. There are about 9 lions in this photo. All tucking in.

#7 Close up of the lions lunching. This was about lunchtime for humans too - don't let anyone tell you that you need to be up at 6 to get the best animal watching. You don't. Cool stuff happens in the day too.

#8 Add a jackal into the mix too. Didn't stay for long, though. Don't forget about the elephants.

#9 It seems that the elephants aren't too keen on the lion restaurant nearby, even though its no threat to them. The elephants charge and the lions scatter.

#10 Not so scary that the lions don't collect their lunch

#11 Lunch eaten and she's off for a sleep. Lunch for us too, only to discover that all these pics were at 1600 ISO - ********.

Very interesting ... I wonder if you were there just before us as we saw a pride of lions at that same waterhole eating a kill in what seems to be the same area. We were there first week September. Must have been some great viewing anyway.

Hi - these were all taken on 20 September at (I think) Goas. It was indeed great viewing - especially when the elephants charged.

crikey those are good
lucky it was a Canon so the noise wasn't too bad
just have to go again!!!!!

Thats a "GREAT" sequence (y)

Nooooooo! :bang: :( you must have been so gutted.

I was seriously irritated when I discovered that these were all at 1600 ISO. But, as you can see, I managed to salvage the photos. Its a testament to the 30D that I could do this, as well as the fact that I was dead lucky to have the camera set to AV priority (I often use TV with long lenses to avoid camera shake) so that the shutter speeds were super fast.

Thanks all for your kind comments. Its appreciated.

Super collection, you've done a fantastic job capturing the event.

Unlucky on the ISO thing, on th up side I bet you won't do it again;)

Great set!!..The size of the elephants really shows against the lions in the last couple of shots..if only nikons could handle iso 1600 as well..lol

I like the sequence. Great story.

Never mind the ISO

Cool set! You must have been frothing witnessing that first hand :D

Excellent sequence

Fantastic series, what an amazing series of events. Sounds like you have the same problem as me when I'm in africa, you get so excited about what you are seeing that you forget to check the basics on your camera.

A bit aggressive noise reduction in the big ones, but they're still nice.

I didn't run any noise reduction filters on any of them. I did, however, artificially reduce the exposure in Adobe Camera Raw.
