Hi everyone,

I have an issue with my new email account. Basically, I have a new web host and a new domain. My email address is: me@yourdomain.com

I have set up Google Apps so that I can use gmail to manage the delivery and sending of my emails for the time being. Short term solution and it is an email client I am familiar with.

But I can't seem to get my emails into the gmail inbox. I can see them in the default email client that came with my web host service but not under gmail. When I log into my email address it is blank.

No doubt I need to change some settings but I'm unsure exactly what I'm looking for. Can someone nudge me in the right direction please? Once I know what I'm looking for then I am good to go. I'm not even sure of the correct terminology to search for.

so basically youre wanting to forward all mail from your "me@yourdomain.com" to your gmail?

if so then you want to look for an email forwarding option in your domain control panel. be aware though when you reply from your gmail it will not come from your "yourdomain" address.

to be honest itd take the same amount of time to sort the forwarding as to set up an IMAP account in a mail app.

Actually I think forwading is the wrong terminology to be honest! :bonk:

The mail app is supposed to be the gmail "client". I've seen it where people log into gmail but it still replies from name@yourdmain.com.

Do you think I can set up the gmail "app / client" to an IMAP account. I've heard of this terminology, just need to be set off in the right direction.
 
OK lets try and be clear as to what it is you want first.

1. Do you want GMail to handle all aspects of the email for your domain?

or

2. Do you want to send email from your GMail account but have it appear as if it came from your domain?

The above sound similar but they are very different and are set up differently

Mostly you are right, and in a fairly rare instance Neil is wrong, in this case.

I agree with him about the Imap set up in a mail client, but for the moment get your Gmail sorted out.

Log on to Gmail, go into Settings-> Accounts and Import.

It's going to be a lot easier to set Gmail up to pull the mail from your domain, rather than a push mechanism. You can configure that quite quickly and easily under the header 'Check mail using POP3:' - be warned though there can be up to a 30+ minute delay between pollings, so if you need an email urgently you may need to do a manual grab.

To set up Gmail as if it was sending from your domain use the 'Send mail as:' configuration menu. To make Gmail fully invisible, you can set it to send through your own domain's SMTP servers, which you'll need the username and password for. Once you've done this, set it to the default sending account.

The Gmail help guide is fairly comprehensive if you need clarification on any of the above!

Agreed, it also helps that I'm using the exact same set up for one of my domains! :D

It sounds like you haven't set up the MX records with your domain, or if you have they haven't propogated through yet.

Did you follow the Google instructions fully when you set up the Google Apps accounts?
 
Thanks for all the help with this guys. I'm completely lost with it all though. When I log into my google apps thing I have one account: the email address that I am going to be using for my website. I think it is because I had that set up from the start and before I properly configured it then I can't change it to how I want it.

I can't get back into the options to change that particular email address to pull email from my hosted account to the gmail app.

It's so frustrating.
 
OK here is an update. I set up a new email account via my web hosting company: test@mydomain.com and follwed everything in gmail. I can log into gmail and send email from gmail no problem and it comes up "test@mydomain.com" but when I reply it does not go into the gmail app.

Is it that I don't have my mail pointed to gmails servers? I'm getting a bit somewhere but this is getting too technical for me now.

SOLVED! :bonk:

What I had to do was create new MX records so that my incoming mail went onto google's servers. This way the emails go straight to gmail and into my dedicated gmail inbox. They all show as test@mydomain.com.

Getting it set up on my android phone was extremely easy too. Thanks for the nudge in the right direction guys. :thumbs:
