No
I did a job last night, shot in medium sized raw files on my 7D
The computer in the office has no problem opening the large raw files on bridge and then photoshop
And now it wont open the MRAW files?
I need help quickly, I've never shot on medium RAW before but I did so, so I could download the files quicker not thinking it would make any difference.
Do I need an update or do I need the canon converter?

I don't know about Canon, but there is no such thing as 'medium-RAW' with Nikon.
You can specify which bit-depth, lossless/uncompressed NEF or lossless/compressed NEF, but that's it.

I was just about to say what Rob said.

Surely a raw file is a raw file

Are you sure it's not medium JPEG's you shot?

You can definately shoot different sized raw files on my 40d too. I would have thought that they will be the same format as the normal raw files. If all else fails get the canon software and use that. I would have thought they would not save you much transfer time using a decent card reader anyway!

On the back of my 7d I have three choices
RAW MRAW and SRAW
18m, 10m and 4.5M respectively
I should of looked into this a bit more, but I assumed thats what it was

Is it the case that the office computer has an older version of PS? If so convert the files to DNG's by downloading Adobe's DNG converter.

Looks like it's a different name for the same thing I mentioned - there is a small difference in size between a 16-bit RAW and a 12-bit RAW, as well as between compressed and uncompressed, but not as huge a difference as you've detailed here...

My RAW/NEF file options are all within 5Mb of one another - to jump from 18Mb to 4.5Mb would require going to JPEG-High or changing from FX to DX-crop in-camera.

How old is your photoshop? If its an old one it may not support that particular RAW type. Haveyou tried another viewer? I use fastviewer when just reviewing but it will let you convert too. Perhaps its worth trying that?

download a trial of lightroom 3, it should pick up the files fine without the additional software.

S Raw-1 loses 50% pixels, S Raw-2 loses 75%. It's for transmitting files quickly.

If you shot Large JPEG as well, that is 100% pixels with tone compression, basically.

Yep - ditto for that. Should be the quickest and easiest way for you to do what you want. It's a full function download, but time limited to 30 days.

Interesting, I didn't know they could do this. :)

There are times I wish I could shoot a 5 or 6MP NEF file on my D300s.

Surely the whole point of shooting RAW images (Canon or Nikon) is to obtain the best possible quality the camera can give.

If all you want to do is simply download what you shoot faster, shot .jpgs

Not a case of downloading what I shoot faster, it's having a file that's WAY in excess of what you need.

If I'm shooting an image specifically for a 1920x1080 HD video project, I don't *NEED* a 12MP image. But, I still want RAW flexibility.

Doesn't your D2x have a high speed crop mode that shoots small RAW files btw?

interesting, thanks for explaining that one

yer it was abit silly shooting raw, when I wanted fast file transfer but the kind of job it was, required the ability to rescue any bad pictures of people who were particularly important.

I ended up running home and grabbing my laptop to use the canon software to convert the files.

But for the life of me I can't figure out why bridge and cs4 will read the full raw files but not the other ones.
Any guesses?
