hi guys
was just wondering what kind of standby life i should expect to see from my batterys

i've left my camera fully charged & picked it up a week later with no problem, this was the same for the 2 i had in the grip :)

this obviously led me to believe that they had a very low self discharge rate & that if left charged i would be ready to shoot at a moments notice :naughty:

well yesterday after a dismal days rain there appeared to be a nice richly red sunset developing so i drove home quick, grabbed my bag jumped back in the car & quickly drove to the closest place i could see a reasonable amount of sky from. in this case the Aviator hotel car park looking out towards Farnborough airfield. whipped my D200 out & dead, noticed the switch had either been knocked into or left in the on position i though thats ok, the grips ready to go. screwed it on jumped out & :shake:
same as :(

tbh i'd missed the best of it driving & getting my bag etc but it was pretty disappointing. whipped out my LX3 but as it was getting a bit dark then & i'd missed the best of it the smudged noisy pics from that only served to rub it in a bit :bang:

so how long can you reasonably expect them to last?
is it better to store them out of the body/grip?
i know the obvious answer is to use my camera more & it'll always be ready to go but sometimes it might get left for a week or two

I couldn't give you a technical answer as I have never had this problem. However up until recently I had 7 batteries and i have never had this problem with any. I guess I haven't left the camera (and grip) for more than about 2 weeks at most, but even in use i haven't had to charge the batteries sometimes for several weeks. If i go back to mine after a week or two the meter bars are still full.

There are times when my D700 (same EN-EL3e battery) gets left unused for a few weeks but I've never had a problem with the battery being dead when I pick it up again. Maybe your batteries are close to the end of their lives? Pretty sure there's an option in the D200 menu to check the state of the batteries, it may well be time for new ones.

according to the battery life indicating feature they are stil showing up as tip top so its definitely a strange one

i'm charging them now so i'll see what they're like in a few days :)
