Yes
I have not invested in a new system for almost 12yrs when I spent almost £7k on my new Eos 1ds. At 11.3 mp I was over the moon and I still use it to this day.

So now, I have some funds available for a newer system and the DX is not really for me (more sports orientated) but have been looking at the EOS 5 MkIII which is quite attractive now there has been a price drop. Also on the table is the EOS 5 DS. ASll withing budget.

So, am looking for advice from those of you who alread own one of these camers. I am taken with the 50 MP of the DS but worry how the hell I am going to process such large files. Surely it would mean a computer upgrade as I'm only on a HP from Currys at 8 GB RAM (I think)

Other than that I have found a cool deal online for the MMK III (see below)

- Canon EOS 5D Mark III Body
- Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
- Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens (White Box)
- Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM Lens
- DigitalRev DSLR Camera Gifts Package

All for £ 3209.99

All my lenses were purchased many moons ago when I purchased my EOS 5 (film) camera in the '90's LOL So I need some new glass.

On the other hand I can get the DS R for £2659 (new)

Which deal would tempt you? Thanks

8GB RAM doesnt tell us the spec or wether your computer would handle the files.

Depends what you shoot.

I think you'll definitely notice the difference between a 5D3 and 5DS in terms of processing full size RAW files. The machine isnt that bad but a 50MP RAW is going to be demanding. Depends on how much free time you have :D

Next...... what do you take photos of?

Mainly portraits & landscapes but often other things also.

If I go the DS route then I have no new glass for a while

Seems like a bit of everything then. Id proabbly go for the 5D3 package, it does everything well, the 5DS just has more pixels. The 5DS isnt really going to shine without top end lenses so youll have all the pixels but youll lose that advantage.

Another to consider is the 6D, slightly better sensor (ISO, DR) than the 5D3, but weaker AF. Its also very cheap.

Thanks Twist, that confirms what I suspected. 22 mp is going to improve on my current 11 I'm sure and that deal looks good to me. Just need to budget for a grip and spare battery and that's it.

Bear in mind all those lenses are a bit old now and I personally wouldn't invest in any of them now. In fact NONE of them are listed on the list of lenses Canon say are suitable for the 5DS/5DSR.

Instead of those I would suggest

EF 16-35 f/4L IS USM
EF 24-70 f/4L IS USM
EF 70-200 f/4L USM

Yes. the latter without IS is a cheap and wonderful lens and strangely this lens is on the list of supported lenses - see here: http://www.everyothershot.com/canon-5dsr-list-of-suitable-lenses/

But mostly I suggest the non-IS version so that you can probably get all three of these for near the price of the three you listed before. And these are much more likely to last the test of time.

He wasnt going to buy them to put on a 5DS. If he gets the 5DS he cant afford any lenses.

I understand that, but you don't buy your glass just for the camera you have now, you want to think about it as an investment for the future. And the choice of lenses he listed was not wise for this.

Do you? I dont. But I dont hang onto gear for years.

If hes kept his current camera for 12 years Im sure even the newer lenses will need replacing after that amount of time for the next big thing.

Even if you plan to sell your lenses within a year or two these ones won't hold their value anywhere near as well as the newer lenses.

Having said that it certainly looks like a good deal for the whole package. I just wanted to make sure the original poster was aware that these lenses are older and not up to the same standard as the newer Canon L lenses.

But they cost more, Id expect depreciation to be in the same region within a year or two.

As already posted the 24-105 is better over 50mm than the 24-70 and the 70-200 IS is arguably better than the non IS. So that leaves the 16-35 vs 17-40, which does seem better. Choice depends on favoured focal lengths then I guess. I think hed be happy either way he goes as its still a huge upgrade.

Ok some interesting info there guys but as Twist said, I don't change my gear all that often.... If it works for me then it works for me! I am now retired so I don't have the funds to chuck about like that on a hobby, the Mrs would not be too happy.

I have read reviews on all the lenses listed in their deal and they all get a good review, ok I did not check the dates but I know the 70-200 is not that old. I will check the ones listed but I can't see me getting them for the same money.

If these are fit for the EOS 5 mk3 then I will be a happy dude. If I wanted the very best I would have opted for the 1DX or the 5DS. I am trying to improve my gear on a budget.

I own both the 17-40 and the 24-105 and have taken great shots with both. They are perfectly good lenses for the 5D Mark III.

But be aware variation on the 17-40 seems quite significant so it's pot luck whether you'll get a 'good' one or not.

I'd go with the Mk3 and the lenses. Unless you plan to print at billboard size or crop heavily I don't know what the point of the 5ds/r is! Maybe just to put Canon at the head of the pixel race?

The 24-105 is a great general purpose lens. I'm not so sure about the 17-40; mine is not great. Both of these have barrel distortion at the wide end but that can easily be fixed in PP. Could you go up a notch to the 16-35 f4? That lens is reckoned to be much better.

Agreed, the17-40 is hit and miss so take the time to test within returns period.

5D3 all the way, it is and will remain a stunning camera unless Canon come up with a sensor that has greater tonal range, there are more than enough pixels in the mk3 to keep any serious amateur (or pro) happy for a few years yet. Af is only bettered by 1dx.
For me the 70/200 isn't long enough, I prefer 24/70 combined with 100/400.
If I was on a budget I would buy the camera new and the lenses 2nd hand.

I have a 5DS, and it's a great camera, I bought it to upgrade my 1Ds MKIII, and it does exactly what's required of it, mainly landscapes/people.
And my current lenses work fine, so 135mm F2, 200mm F2.8, 24-70 F2.8 (Mk1), 50mm F1.4 and a 25 year old 300mm F2.8L, the only one I felt was struggling a bit was 17-40 F4L?
Regarding the file size, at 50mb raw and 120mb+ tifs, it's some substantial pixel real estate, so your current computer may struggle a bit, especially with complex editing.

Forget about megapixels, they really mean nothing with modern systems.

That said 50mp is waaay too much for 99% of photographers and will simply result in a full HD before long.

Yes Jim... Although I will have the funds to get the DS and I like the best (so it lasts) I too have been thinking about this. I only ever print to A3 and with the new Epson at A2 ??????.... Never ending lol. I don't see me needing 50 MP just yet.

I used to sell to magazines in the 80's & 90's, before photography took a back seat (divorce and became a single parent) Now in my early retirement I would dearly like to get back into it just for beer money and the fun of seeing them in print. So I guess the 5D3 at 22 MP will be enough (I hope)

I have extended the budget slightly to include the better lenses as I found HDEW & PANAMOZ from these forums and what a saving?

Should be about 3 weeks hopefully
