Equipment for motorsport photography

Hi there,

I am a newbie to this forum and am looking for some help.

I have been a motorsport fanatic and regularly go to race weekends. I would like to get some high quality camera equipment which will enable me to take some good quality photos. I am not talking about any professional equipment as this will only be a hobby!

My budget is around £600 and my preference would be Canon. Would anyone be able to recommend some setups to me, and if possible, post some motorsport shots they have taken using this equipment?

Any help much appreciated,

Cheers :D

Circuit? Rallying? Hillclimbs? Drag racing?

Secondhand or New?

New (slightly over budget £ 700ish)
Canon 450D with 18-55IS kit lens and Sigma 70-300 APO lens or
Canon 450D with 18-55IS kit lens and Canon 55-250IS lens

Used:
Canon 30D with either those lenses.

It would be for circuit racing and new! I think I could stretch to £700 - does anyone have any shots taken with this camera?

The trouble is that resized shots for the web its virtually impossible to give a good idea of the specs. Look at Matt Sayles threads, he uses a 400D and a Sigma 70-300. A 450D or similar would give equal good shots.

The lens is more important than the body, personally, I would look at the second hand market, a good secondhand canon 20D is £250 (no difference between 20D & 30D) leaving you £450 for a new lens, which is about what a canon 70-300mm IS USM is going for nowadays, probably one of the best budget lenses out there and it takes very good images as well or you could have a look what the secondhand market has to offer as well

Park camera's, Camtech, Mifsuds, mpbphotograhic or ffordes are good secondhand dealers, there are a few lenses and camera's at reasonable prices on any of the websites currently at the moment.

There's a 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM currently in the sale forum going for £300
