Hey guys,

have a freind who wants to purchase his first dSLR for motorsport. It's not anything I have ever done so only have a bit of knowledge. Problem is he only has a budget of £500 so I'm thinking he'll need to go 2nd hand considering I'm assuming he'll need 200mm minimum on his lens choice.

I have a canon but I'm not brand loyal so I'll recommend him a nikon if thats what does the job.

I've seen that the sigma 70-300mm is £120 new so that would leave £380 for a body and I know he could easily get a 2nd hand 450D for that but i don't know if 3.5 fps and no IS on the lens really suits motorport.

any help would be appreciated

Depends what sort of motorsport.

For cars + circuits, I would suggest a zoom with maximum range of at least 200mm, so something like a 70-200, 55-250IS or 70-300. Suggest Sigma 70-300 APO version over the ordinary DG Macro or the Canon 55-250IS

Bikes are smaller so you may prefer a slightly longer range if bikes are your thing.

IS can be substituted for good posture and technique.

It will be cars and circuits,

so the APO we are looking more at £150, leaving £350 for the body - but which body?

A 2nd hand 40D is around that ball park, if you're patient and keep a keen eye on the classifieds here.
Better AF and higher FPS than the 450D

There's one in there right now, it's £420. looking at the archive I don't see any below £400

you're pushing it budget wise but I'd be tempted to look at the likes of a tokina 80-400mm AT-X paired up with a 20D. Might not be the best possible combination but should be pretty versatile.
