Drop a pm to both JamesOliverStone and Jacob12_1993. They've both been working out in the Far East in similar circumstances within the last 18 months or so and should be able to give you some decent advice for preparation!
 
Hello Will,

What time of the year are you visiting Cambodia? Humidity varies during the year with an increase during the monsoon season. As you can see from the graph below it peaks late summer/early autumn time but is no more worse than the UK during Jan/Feb.

For insurance purposes, I use and have claimed whilst in Asia with Photoguard for an accidentally damaged Nikon camera without any issues. They were understanding that I couldn't get a repair quote etc and still replaced it...top marks from me.

I'm flying out October 1st till December 20th.
That is good to know about humidity - so I won't need to worry about warming cabinets or anything? Even in the jungle?

Nice to hear that - do they send a replacement out to you in country? How quick was the replacement?

Hello Will,

you need to treat humidity as you would do with extreme cold...allow it to gently acclimatize when coming in and out of air conditioning. Large Zip-lock food bags can be handy for keeping your gear in when heading back into an air conditioned hotel etc as it allows the condensation to form on the bag and not the gear. However if you will be in the jungle, a nice microfibre cloth or something maybe handy for wiping your gear down every so often. However don't worry too much, it sounds much worse than it is in practice.

As long as everything is in order I can't see why they wouldn't send it out to you but as I couldn't get a repair quote etc they wanted me to send them some proof of ownership etc (which unfortunately was back in the UK). I prefer to carry two bodies than worry about breaking a camera and not getting a replacement whilst away.:thumbs:
 
Interested in this thread - I'm travelling for 12 months from June 2013 to Australia, NZ and Thailand (many other places as well). Will be taking along 4 lenses and a 40d and would like some sort of insurance. Any thoughts of a good company?

Thanks, so you would recommend giving PhotoGuard a call? Are their prices reasonable?
 
I agree with Jacob here, that's the same company that I use and I find them very competitive. As for Cambodia, as said before, your biggest issue will be with the Humidity. just make sure you get plenty of time to get your gear to acclimatise with the ambient air when you come from an AC area. It can be tricky if you are travelling in relative luxury, as you may go from AC restaurant, AC taxi etc... I went everywhere on tuk tuk's and had my gear in the air most of the time so it wasn't an issue.

Don't worry about shooting on the streets too, most people are so used to tourists with cameras that they barely even notice you.

I much prefer areas like battambang rather than the tourist hotspots like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, although you will have to be there if you want to go to the temples, which lets face it is a must!

Zip lock bags can be a great idea if you want to acclimatise gear without moisture forming on it, so if you haven't got weather sealed gear that might be a good idea.

Other than that, enjoy yourself, its one of my favourite places on the planet :thumbs:

Thanks very much for the reply.

What price should I be looking at for insurance do you think? I don't want to get ripped off thinking it's normal!

I'm shooting with a Nikon d4, that should be pretty well weather sealed?

I wouldn't worry to much about the condensation we went in August so peak humidity, it was like being in a swimming pool and I took.no special precautions with my 30d or lenses none of which were sealed!

Cambodia is an amazing place I'm sure you will have an amazing time!
