Hi Guys
Started to get some good quality camera and equipment just lately and going on a big trip soon, can anybody suggest a good and reasonable insurance company.

I insured £8200 worth of gear with Photoguard for £21 per month. Here's a tip for you: I left my quote in the basket for a couple of days whilst I was comparing quotes. They called me, I believe, 2 days later to ask if the quote was ok. I told them I was just weighing up my options (true!). I was then offered my quote for £21 p/m instead of £25 if I took it out on the phone. I feel safe in the knowledge I'm insured now.

There's also Aaduki who seem to get decent reviews.

Just went through Photoguard and put a quote in the basket so to speak.

£5500 with some options ticked came to £24 .86 a month. sent the quote to myself and within about 10 minutes got a call from Warren at Photoguard to have a chat about some bits. 20% off if I call back and order over the phone, can be on any policy, not just the one I picked out before.

Will sort that this week I think!

Household insurance just add it to, it is far cheaper than a dedicated camera insurance company for the same cover

The issue there is that I need household cover and any claim of my camera gear would reflect on my household premium.

If the premium for camera gear got too high I could then more it to household or just not have any.

£250-£300 pur year is a lot more than I wanted or expected to pay. I could get my old banger car insured for £300. And I don't want to put it on the household insurance.

What were you insuring Dave?

The issue is of course that your old banger car can't get stolen from your side in public, and since it's an old banger nobody wants to steal it :p

That is what I found. Camera insurance is far higher than an expensive car left in the road overnight even. So one that basis there must be a huge number of cameras stolen each day to justify such high premiums.

That is equal to £252 per year, or a car worth £24,000 would have to have pay £ 756+ per annum to put it in perspective.
Even insuring a house worth £100,000s cost far far less

Well I suppose I got about 5-6 grand I want to insure and like I say I got this trip to Florida and Everglades. So I definitely need some kind on insurance

Why not check out you holiday insurance cover? your not going to be taking out all your camera gear. Holiday insurance includes a certain amount of cover for valuable items.

There are lots of camera insurers out there, the problem is, the proof in the pudding, you only find out how good they are when you have to make a claim.

The amount you pay also depends on your equipment, old for new can become an issue on . Example I have a 300mm f2.8 lens but its discontinued, the replacement is £5000 give or take, the cost of your equipment mounts up, because its the replacement price not its current value, hence I've got over £20k to insure (cameras, lenses).

Depending on the amount you want to insure and the maximum cost of your most expensive single item, you could look at insuring it with your house insurance

Other things to think about are international cover, which costs more but by the sounds of things you want so is worthwhile having. And another is public liability which I think Photoguard latch onto their policies, I'm uncertain whether you can remove it and save some money though, it's been months since i renewed mine

Oh well I took the plunge at Photoguard. Just over 5 grand worth of stuff came to £205 pur year. Bit cheaper than the car then :) and yes I didn't have the public liability on it . Thanks everyone.

Look on the bright side. If you drop it in the Atlantic on the flight over, your home insurance next year won't go through the roof :)

Conversely it a lightning bolt goes thru your roof it won't make any difference to your camera insurance;)

What are photoguard like with claims??

I know some camera insurance firms can be a bit of a pain when it comes to claims as the small print can be pretty excesive.... do they cover accidental damage (i.e dropping the camera in teh sea) and full replacement policy (i.e if you bust your camera you get a brand new one not the current value of the depreciated asset)

Glover and Howe, ask for Luke. I had to make a claim, and they were actually helpful.

Be careful who you go with, and read the small print - many household policies don't insure equipment in a car, and even dedicated policies have stupid clauses like "only insured in a vehicle which doesn't have access into the locked boot" (IE Vauxhall Viva, Escort MK 1 and 2 etc) or "not covered if the vehicle is unattended and out of site" (IE when you stop at the services to go to the loo)
