Equipment valuation

No
I spoke to my insurance company today (Endsleigh) as my equipment wasn't actually insured except for specific trips.

That's now done, at great expense, and they said in the event of a claim I need to provide a receipt or written valuation within the last 5 years.

I was wondering, has anyone experience of how to get such written valuation? Preferably for free. I do have most receipts I think, but some of them aren't ideal - and in the case of simply electronics the items are actually grey imports I believe. Some of them cost < 2nd hand prices in LCE.

In addition, my non-L 70-300 was £313 on amazon, it's in near perfect condition but now sells for £366 there; except I'm sure a 2nd hand valuation wouldn't be much more than £300?

Oh and a helpful hint, it's significantly (20-30%) cheaper to insure lots of items at < £1k per item instead of a block of camera equipment at several thousand.

If the policy is old for new, would it not be prudent to insure for replacement value?

To be honest they didnt ask about replacement value; just current value so I went with approximate amazon retail prices at the moment. I think I have most of the receipts but not all; and if it's more than 5 years old the implication was needing a valuation.

I'm guessing the best thing to do is start looking for and keeping the receipts safe? I mean what happens if the house (with all receipts) was to burn down?!

If you want to put current values then use Jessops. At least one insurer issues Jessops vouchers for camera / lens claims so you're as well using their pricing imo. If you go into one of their stores they can also issue a printed quotation which could be helpful.

I think you would need some receipts to back up a claim. No insurance company would pay what you think is the 'going rate'.

thanks, I've found most of the online receipts, think I'll be best off emailing them in and finding out exactly what the process would be if I do drop a lens or if one goes walk-about. You hope it'll never happen, but experience tells me it could
