ERR 1 Canon 17-85 so looking to replace.

My canon ef-s 17-85 as just developed ERR1 fault when trying to shoot at different F Stops. I have tried cleaning the contacts, swapping bodies etc.

As a result i am looking to replace the lens. I mainly used the lens for photograghing the g/kids inside, so f2.8 would be nice, and similar focal range

I could probably stretch the budget to £350 - 400 (just bought a 7D, so need to keep in line at home, lol). What are the best options in this price range.

Any advice would be greatly received, added pressure to replace as I have been volunteered to take some shots of the grand kids at a Xmas party next Sunday.
 
It's safe to say, the lens that suits you best and is widely regarded AS the best is the Canon 17-50 f2.8

Failing that, you could look at the Tamron.
 
Looked at the Canon, bit out of my price range tbh. Seen lots of reviews about the tamron and sigma equivalent, but unsure which is the better one.

Which Tamron? The Vc or non, how does the sigma Os stand up.

Not tried the Sigma myself, or the Tammy VC, but I did have the non-VC and it was fantastic. I've read a few times the VC wasn't as sharp, but I think the VC2 is just as good as the non-VC now.
 
The EF-S 15-85 is not f2.8 but is the same focal range and is a superb lens.

Don't forget to list the old lens on here or Ebay (as faulty of course), you should get a few quid for it if it is still in fairly good condition which can go towards your new lens.
