At the end of my holiday last week my camera displayed an "err 99" message when i attempted to take a photo.

This is occuring with a 50mm 1.8 and 55-250mm f4 IS.
This is occuring with and without my battery grip fitted
I have followed all the reset and cleaning steps outlined in THIS WEBPAGE

I think i am close to needing Canon to do a repair or service on my camera. It is not something i have ever had to do. Can anyone give some advice/help on what i should do please?

This has happened to my old 350D before, blowing on the battery or recharging normally fixed it.

This is looking pretty terminal now.

Everything i read suggests sending it off for a service, but spending £120 on this seems like a waste of money to me.

I've having a look at the cost of replacing the camera which goes 2nd hand for around 150-180 but i've also been having a look at the 30d

It seems to give me some improvements on the 300d without being too much more ££s.

I am hoping to pick a body up for between £250-275, is there a better camera (Canon) for this money. I cannot go beyond £275, not even by a penny :'(

I am hoping the sale of some of my other gear will cover the cost of this.

The chances are that the ERR99 is relating to the shutter and its need for a replacement. The 300D is getting on a bit now so its fair assumption to make that the shutter has reached or is close to its life expectancy.

The only way round this would be to either send it off to get the shutter replaced, but yeah will cost you around the £120 mark, or you could sell it on eBay as it is for spares or repair and put the money towards another body. If I were you I would be inclined to go with the latter as it is a fairly old body now and you could find yourself spending more money in the future when something else goes wrong.

£275 should get you a decent Canon body, assuming you are sticking with Canon.

Thanks very much for the link. I'll keep an eye on that for sure.

At least it had a good life, that thing is old now

Just to round off the thread...

I have been watching forums/gumtree and ebay for a 30d and bought one yesterday for £280 with the Canon grip inc. (under 5k shutter Acc) so i am very happy.

I'm going to sell my 300d and its grip to part fund the upgrade. Thanks to everyone for their help/advice and ideas. Its really appreciated.

Look out for some 30d photos soon!
