I thought I would share this info as I feel it has saved me sending my camera away for a costly service/repair and possibly provide a quick checklist of things for people to try if they experience this error message.

I experienced the error 99 this weekend when shooting outdoors in sunny weather, using canon 300d, bought in Germany, now in the UK. I was using a 75-300 canon lens at 5.6, iso 100 on AV. It suddenly stopped working giving the error99 message. I carefully tried the eraser on contacts method as I'd had this occur on a previous camera and this method had been successful, but it did not work this time. I tried changing cards, batteries and lenses to no avail.
Out of curiosity I switched the camera to clean sensor mode to see what occured, and there was my answer - the mirror had locked, I gave it a gently push and it slid into place. Switched camera off then on and now my camera is working again.
Hope this might help someone in the future.

Yep, I will when I can afford to, at the moment Im just so relieved to have a working camera as I wouldve had to go without one for a long long time - I cannot work at present due to illness, so money is more than tight.

error 99 is a generic message from what I have been told

When I had this error code and it turned out to be the shutter died (after 15000 clicks so was not impressed!). Had it serviced and sutter replaced by www.fixationuk.com in super quick time :)

It may be worth having a service done when you can afford it as it is recommended to be done every 18 months but at about £90 each service it mounts up!

Good ol err99. It simply means "an error has occurred. I don't have an error no for it. I'll use this one"

Had a similar experience with the pop up flash on a 20D. Flash failed to pop for some reason. Got the error. Assisted the flash into the correct position a couple of time , all OK

Wouldn't worry to much , at the moment, may have been a one off
