I thought I would share this info as I feel it has saved me sending my camera away for a costly service/repair and possibly provide a quick checklist of things for people to try if they experience this error message.
I experienced the error 99 this weekend when shooting outdoors in sunny weather, using canon 300d, bought in Germany, now in the UK. I was using a 75-300 canon lens at 5.6, iso 100 on AV. It suddenly stopped working giving the error99 message. I carefully tried the eraser on contacts method as I'd had this occur on a previous camera and this method had been successful, but it did not work this time. I tried changing cards, batteries and lenses to no avail.
Out of curiosity I switched the camera to clean sensor mode to see what occured, and there was my answer - the mirror had locked, I gave it a gently push and it slid into place. Switched camera off then on and now my camera is working again.
Hope this might help someone in the future.
