I have tried a TP Search and Google but cannot find anything to help, has anyone else had this error with this lens, it is showing as Error 01 Clean Lens Contacts, it appears to be an intermittent fault

Thanks for any help

Matthew....There's a reasonably common problem with the 17-85 in that the tracks on an internal ribbon cable fracture. If this is your problem then the error will show more on the wide end (17-35 ish) but be fine at the long end.
The error code is often the un-assigned Err99 but I would guess that it depends which tracks on the cable have failed.

Will follow with great interest, my same lens has developed same fault 2 weeks back... Mine is intermittent regardless of aperture, shutter speed or mode.

Sometimes in viewfinder its goes a little darker as well when trying to take a photo. It makes a noise like half a shutter press then error as above appears.

I have tried lens on 2 different bodies and same thing happens

Basically unusable.

I have been in touch with Canon, and they said to get in touch with a authorised maintenance centre, who have quoted me £80-150 depending on the parts that are broken ;) I guess it will be going off for service and fixing in the next few days

Its a common fault in this lens, and I was quoted around £150 to repair the lens because the repair involves replacing the aperture assembly and not just the flex cable itself. I decided to sell it on ebay instead with an accurate description of the fault and it went for around £100 which I put toward purchasing the Canon 18-135mm as a replacement for around £200.

This is probably a daft question, but did you clean the lens contacts? :)

Not daft at all, I have given them a quick clean but I am going to get some electrical contact cleaner tomorrow to try and also test the lens on my mate 400D just to ensure it's not a body fault though I'm sure it's not as my other lens are working with out issue, part of me thinks it is only a contacts issue as it is very intermittent :bang:

By way of an update it has been reported that it's knackered IS Motor :bang: and it's going to cost about £160 including a full service and clean :( looking forward to getting it back though apparently not for 10 days :bang:

I thought that I should put a post now that I've received the lens back

Overall I'm happy as I now have a fully working lens back in my possession and leahmans did a great job on the repair also cleaning and checking over the whole lens

If I'm honest the communication from them was less than ideal, I had a lot off issues getting through to them over the phone...and the turnaround was a lot slower that I expected and was promised which is not good, this and the poor communication may put me off using them in the future

Is that the repair place in Stoke on Trent?

Was considering them for a maintenance on the d300...

Yeah it is, I don't want to put you off them as there works seems good such as they diagnose the fault for free, the fixed it cleaned the lens to remove dust specs that were in the lens and the ensure the lens was correctly calibrated after the work they had done

It was there communication that let them down for me, it took them 5+ minutes to answer there phone :bonk:

Iam getting error 01 on my 24-105 with my 7d is fixation still the best/cheapest repair center?

I've used Canon at Elstree for all my repairs. Can't fault them over service and communication and wouldn't go anywhere else .They operate a fixed price menu for lots of repairs so you'll probably get a quote over the phone. If you are a CPS member 2-3 day service in house.

Give them a ring on 0208 731 4132
