Hi guys & gals,

I have tonight noticed an Err 06 on my 40D when switching on?

after i have managed to clear it (switching on/off, removing grip and replacing etc) it will not access the top lcd functions correctly???

example, top lcd light will not come on, if I set in manual mode, the aperture setting goes the opposite way to the way I'm scrolling, and jumps settings, and the ISO adjustment using the scroll wheel just goes haywire when i rotate it??

Anyone else had this?

The 40D was bought new from Jessops in May last year, so not a year old!!

Any suggestions?

Cheers
J

Sounds like there's some poor contact going on in there, maybe a little damp has got in. As it's not a year old, take it back to Jessops under warrantee, if they say it will be a few weeks as they have to send it away, ask them for a loner while it's gone, you may get lucky :)

The error code you're seeing is reporting a malfunction of the automatic sensor cleaner.....unless you're running with firmware 1.1.0 or below. The older firmware versions had a bug that could give this error at power-on. If a contact problem is causing the power to glitch then it may well be cycling often enough to throw up the error.

Personally I agree with the suggestions to send it in for repair - but don't bother going to Jessops.

Deal direct, I got excellent service from H Lehmann who are an approved repair centre for Canon

Yes as Canon Bob says, it's a malfunction of the automatic sensor cleaner. Would agree with sending it back - contact Canon direct at Elstree, they will tell you exactly what to send them and they have a reasonably quick turn round. Hope you get it sorted

Try turning off automatic sensor cleaning to see whether the fault still occurs. If it goes away you know the cause.

I am not sure how a sensor clean fail can affect the the selection dials. It sounds more like a dodgy contact or moisture inside the body to me. I guess a sensor fail can also be triggered by power issues.

Have you also tried tpowering it on without battery grip? I assume you are using official batteries as well?
