I belive the normal trick is to "rub" a rubber ( eraser)
over them to remove specks of crap and grease HTH
Over the lens contacts I guess, as all other lenses are ok ?

No, I have never updated the firmware in either the 1DMK3 or the 40D - should I have ?

A firmware update can't hurt. Is there any probs with the 50mm's focussing. Sometimes the focussing ring becomes disconnected from the gear system, try switching the lens to manual and turning the focussing ring in to its minimum focussing distance and give it a wee tweak. See if that makes a difference.

i would not update the firmware as its not a cam problem and if its not broke dont fix it

Now mended with a new one, just got round to taking it in today, quick hook up to a camera in the shop and faulty lens confirmed, big up to Wilkinsons of Kendal for their no nonsense approach and for being ace !
