Error 99!

Hi all,

I've been using my Canon 40D with just the one lens, Tamron 17-50 2.8, for about year now. Decided it was time to add to that so went for a Canon 70-300 IS USM. Really pleased with it but when I went to take a shot this morning I got the Error 99 Message telling me to remove the battery and try again - thought it was the new lens but now it's coming up every time even with the Tamron or no lens mounted.

I've updated the firmware, removed the CF card and tried a shot without, cleaned the contacts thoroughly and removed the battery more times than I can count but no joy.

Looks like my faithful 40D is goosed. Any other suggestions? And would it be a cheap and easy fix or more than the body is worth?

"IF" its the shutter (wont cost much to get it checked with an estimate) it will cost around the 150 to 200 mark i would imagine. So is it worth it on a £200 body ? Well yes because to replace it will cost £200 and the replacement wont have a brand new shutter.... "IF" its the shutter.

I dont know where your nearest canon repair centre is but for around £10 postage A.J. Johnstones in Glasgow will give you a repair estimate. Worth the effort i would think.

Cheers Gary, hadn't thought of it like that.

I understand from what I've read that error 99 is a sort of generic "could be anything" error message so I'm at the mercy of the camera repair shop really.

Think there's a place in Newcastle that have a decent rep, I'll give them a ring and see what they say.

Do lots of google research on repair shops to make sure you minimise getting ripped off. Authorised canon centres should be approached first if only for a benchmark quote but in all honesty i would rather spend a little more with an official and reputable agent.
