My sons very first football match today. There I was, freezing cold being a proud mum just wanting to take a few shots of his debut when I only go and get asked to take all the flippin photos for their website/match report  No pressure

Anyway....I kept getting this error 99 mesage and had to keep turning camera off and on again. Since getting home and looking at the canon site, error 99 may be caused to using non-canon lenses. I was using a tamron 55-200. I started off in TV then tried P but still made no difference?

What do you think?

he scored a goal which was :woot: and they drew 2-2 by the way

Is it specific settings/modes? I was shooting continuous.

thanks for that matty777...a bit of intersting reading there for me :)

I had the same with my tamron 200-500mm. And when I phoned them, and told them I was getting a error 99. They told me that it is a lens error code. They fixed it under warrenty. (a new diaphram and p.c.b board)

did you? mmmm.......mines out of warranty. typical!

Oh dear, not worth getting them to have a look, as they charge £58 per hour plus parts. They will phone you back after they have had a look, and tell you what is wrong, and ask if you wish to have it fixed. But if you say no, they still charge £58 per hour they spent finding the fault.

Error99 is a general error message. Can mean a whole range of things!

I had one on my last 40D, it turned out to be the shutter mechanism.

It can also be caused by bad battery connections, bad lens to camera connections - the list goes on!

Try cleaning the lens and camera connections with a rubber (eraser) - the ones you find on the ends of pencils are quite good! Be careful not to get any rubber shavings inside the camera though!

As for it being out of warrenty you could argue with Canon that a product of this value should not be going wrong after 1 year (depending on the amount of use)!

So Ive now discovered....grrrr

Matty777 link has quite a lot of helpful ideas which includes cleaning the contacts with the pencil eraser, so I am going to go thru them tonight and try to identify where the problem lies. If its the lens then I'm not that bothered as I want to replace it anyway and this would be a good excuse:D

Just given it a a whirl and it appears to be working ok now. I removed battery, cf card and cleaned the lens contacts.

will see how it goes when I go out with my gear this week
