I Was using my d40x again and I think the shutter has stuck? I get "error press shutter release button again" in the display. Can't make this go away - any suggestions?

Try turning it off, removing battery. replace and turn it on again.
 
I have removed everything - card as well de-powered and re-powered. No Joy. Viewfinder is black and mirror lock up in settings menu is unavailable. This doesn't bode well....
 
I found these two posts on Flickr, seems its a common problem with a few Nikon cameras.

Up to you whether you decide to DIY or have done by Nikon!

Hi Guys, I had the same problem few months ago, after reading some similar posts and trying all suggestions I finally took my D40X to Nikon, they spent two weeks in diagnostics to finally said that will cost me 150$ and 6 more weeks, I got my camera back and I try it and it was working perfectly.. but...yesterday, after some months I got the same error, and here is the solution .
I took off the 8 screws at the bottom plate and the screw hidden at the edge near the battery (you have to take out the battery).
After taking off the bottom plate I saw a red gearwheel and I move it in any direction.. then I put the battery and Viola!!.. worked... then I put back the botton plate... seems that the gear is part of the mechanics of the shutter that probably was stuck.

Here's how I did it.

Get a very small cross head screwdriver (watchmaker size)
A can of WD40
Sticky tape
A good light


Remove the Battery and SD card
Open up the bottom of the D40x putting the small screws onto the sticky tape in order of removal.


You might want to take pic with another camera so you know where all the screws go.
Then remove the metal plate (used for the tripod mount, you will need to remove the back of the D40x as well, it's only 2 screws)

Spray a SMALL amount of WD40 onto the red and white gear wheels.
(Don't use so much that it drips down onto the optics, you don't want oil in there!!!)

Put the battery in and hold it down to make contact, put in the sd card and switch on the camera and try the shutter button. (switch it to manual focus or it might try hunting around for ages for focus)

It might start working, if not move the red wheel a few stops and try again.

Once it's lubed up and the wheels move it should be ok.
Keep taking pics until you feel it is ok.

Then reassemble following the screws backwards on the sticky tape.

No problem, thats what this forum is all about.

Looks like there may be one or two other things to try. Do a search 'nikon error press shutter button again' tapping the bottom of camera, pressing shutter button over and over again, using bulb mode and pressing button etc! (dont know about that one!) try them all, you never know!

I also found out that Nikon UK service centre will take a look at it for free and only charge me £13 to send me my camera back if I decide to do nothing. Very good value for a six yr old camera! Very helpful people.

Send it to Nikon.

It could be the same as those other people had, it could be something completely different.
 
back to Nikon it goes. I shudder when it comes to taking things apart - best left to the experts. Too much to go wrong.

Enclose a slightly gushing letter saying how much you love the camera etc - can't hurt and might get a good result. I'm guessing that Baz's quoted letter/instructions is American? By some accounts, Nikon USA's customer service leaves plenty to be desired - their UK arm is rather better I understand! (Oh, if anyone's considering the DIY approach, I would suggest spraying a brief squirt of GT85 into a small jar and using a needle's eye to transfer a tiny drop onto the cogs. WD40 is actually a water dispersant (the 40th formula they tried, hence the name!) rather than a lubricant while GT85 is a very light lube oil with teflon added.)
 
I wrote a gushing letter and let them know I had to get it replaced within the first week of owning it as the motherboard died and that it had had a second warranty repair when it wouldn't power up - but I had stayed loyal to Nikon and bought a second camera (d7K), but didn't want to loose my beloved d40x - came back with a £138.13 ex vat quote. OUCH. I suspect that this is beyond economic repair is it not? Opinions....?
 
What does the quote say they are planning to do?

You could get a 2nd hand one on eBay for < £200 but the Nikon repaired one might be better.
