Find my iPhone launched last week and is free to use for the iPhone 4, iPad & iPod touch using iOS 4.2:

It's an official Apple App and works in conjunction with a free MobileMe account to locate your phone(within GPS limits), send an alert to it, make it ring even when on silent, and possibly more importantly enables remote locking and data wiping (a la Blackberry systems).
Note that this will only work when your phone is switched on and the App enabled.
Available for iPhone 3 & 3GS but as a paid service.
