Slow down, deep breaths..

What sort of subject are you wanting to shoot? a static subject (e.g. landscape), a slow moving subject (e.g. portrait) or a fast-moving subject (e.g. sport).

Are you going to be using a tripod?

hi..landscape such as houses of parliament..or something like the london eye....(slow moving)...or bulb so light streaming..ive just forgot the setting how to work out the exposure time plse..thks.

Light trails? Choose a likely shutter speed to get the length of trail you want, Manual mode and meter the scene (evaluative mode) to the aperture that gives you the shutter speed you want. Check the results on the screen, adjust from there.

There's a tutorial on light trails in the Tutorial section of the forum.

Hi Mickey, and welcome. You have a very capable camera there and the best way to learn is via going out and making mistakes. I assume you are looking to take some nightscapes around London. Go out and put the camera in Tv mode and take some photos and see how they come out.

One thing to remember is as a rule of thumb the minimum time you can use is the focal length of the lens (ie a 50mm lens should be used at a minimum of 1/50 a second), however if you have tripod this rule can be discarded as the tripod will keep the camera stable.

Most importartant thing is stability!

Is your tripod stable enough to keep your camera shake free for the time you want to expose?

Re settings:
Just put your iso on base, f8+ (should you want everything in focus on a wide lens) and whip out the remote shutter! See what you get :)

Light trails, aim for 30 seconds as a baseline and go from there...

As always...just get out there with some warm clothing, something to eat and some company if possible :) ...and trial & error.

Good luck.

hi..yeah..have a wonderful tripod..i do want to work the exact exposure times tho...not just luck..more precise settings how to achieve crisp low light inner city shots...

In Aperture you just turn the dial to set the aperture or exposure compensation. In Manual you set both the aperture and the shutter speed. When you turn the dial past the maximum length shutter speed "bulb" should come up and the shutter will remain open as you keep the shutter pressed.

I'm normally not one to point others at the manual :D I suppose it's a man thing to aviod such cheating :D but in this case a quick look at the manual may be a good idea as the sections on Aperture/Manual exposure are very clear and helpful.
