No
Was wondering how reliable they are so i thought id ask if anyone had ever had a memory card failure?

Had an Sandisk extreme III fail once
the recovery disc pulled back most of the images
and after a bit of farting around ( on their part) I got it replaced under their warranty
so no real major up-set

Nope :)

Nor do I personally know anyone who has had a failure of any type

Considering how many photos I take now compared to film, I'd easily say I had more 'failures' per 1,000 shots with film then ever with digital

thats good to hear, what make do you use?

lol that must have sucked a bit. atleast you got them back

I have, it was a no brand Ebuyer special in a Canon Powershot. Cant remember exactly but it was around 4 years ago and it said something like 'format error' and wouldn't work any more. Strange.

Since then prices have come down so much there's no reason not to get a decent brand.

Edit, should say, it was a 1gb SD card, back in the days where a no brander was around 15 quid

Yes one of my dive buddies had a memory card fail and lost all his photo's. The card was fairly new (Fuji xd if I recall) and was replaced by the shop he bought it from.

I've had two fail on me and I lost all the bloody images.

One was last year with my fuji finepix S9600, took lots of cracking shots when I went to the beach with friends and before I could save them to the comp the camera kept saying "card read error" so i lost all the images :( was an fuji XD card.

Happened when I bought my D60 aswell, got an 8GB sandisk SDHC card and within a few months it wouldn't work in my camera, needless to say I now save everything straight to the PC after i've been out shooting.

I've had an SD card as fail, luckily it failed 'card read error' when I put it back in the camera after downloading - please excuse the slow typing only I'm gripping the desk as I type.

I have had one of the top brands fail on me, a Lexar, I bought it s/h and often wonder if the seller knew it was a bit iffy.

No it was not bought on here, we are all honest guys:D

I had an Innovate SD fail. It suddenly stopped recording. Fortunately I quickly noticed it.

Once had a 1Gb microdrive card fail a few years back, though I've never had a CF card go bad...

i had a sandisk 128mb card go a few years ago in a samsung camera lost about 130 pics from Honk Kong . not had any problems with any card since

only once...an Xd from amazon...lost 260 shots and it was 7 months old
they refunded me plus the postage to send it back

otherwise...ok so far

I have a "datawrite" card here (2gb) that won't read at all. Luckally it didn't have any shots on it when it failed. I now only use Sandisk cards.

Coincidentally, I've just yesterday had a Corsair 1GB SD card fail - or do something very bizarre.

It was removed from it's normal camera and inserted into another after which it said in both cameras "no files".

Looking at the card through a card reader, it shows some old files from July, but none of the pictures/videos from yesterday. The camera never indicated a fault until it was switched.

Luckily it was only snapshots and videos from the last day of my holiday taken on my compact. The vast majority were taken on my DSLR so it's not a major loss. Annoying though.

From now on, I'm not moving cards about cameras.

Had one fail several years ago - can't remember what brand it was but it wasn't a SanDisk one or any of the other major makes. Sod's law, the images on it were of a family occasion and couldn't be reshot so I had to have the card rescued professionaly (my readers and computers couldn't even see the card). Managed to retrieve the shots I needed thank whatever gods may or may not exist!

Only thing I've ever had was on an xD card, the chip fell off. A bit of superglue and it was fine. Never had an SD card die on me, had a CF card sort of die in my Oly, but a format fixed it.

I had an sd card die, lost all the pics, luckly nothing important, think it was a sandisk.

Had a SD card fail while it was acting as a secondary drive in my eeepc, it was a Maxell.

I had a 4gb fail but had only just started using it. This is why, since that, I test 'em a few times before I go away and steer clear of 8gb cards! Just in case...

I'm using basically no name cards (and one sandisk II, 2gig) and so far, after about 10 000 or so photos and using them in Polish winters and Turkish summers they're still good. Not one problem ever.

I try to cycle through them and make sure to format before each use and store them in dry plastic containers they come in.

No. My CF and SD cards are all SanDisk (apart from one Lexar that came with a camera years ago, only 16MB, so I don't use it) and they've been 100%. I prefer 2 & 4GB cards though, and carry back ups, just in case.

I have had a couple fail. And I think one is on the way out now (sandisk extreeme) as I got a corrupted image on it.
There are limited reads and writes per sector, so if you rotate to a new card every-so-often there shouldn't be a problem with short lifetimes (this one is 3 years).

You'd expect cards to be very reliable as there are no moving parts and it's essentially a piece of plastic with some metal soldered on, surrounded by another piece of plastic. Things like dropping it shouldn't damage it really (internally anyway).

I know of a guy who left a CF card in his jeans pocket.... It went through the wash and still worked.

Personally I have not had a loss:lol: But that's not to say it won't one day:'(
