I mean this with no disrespect to those who suffer from autism. My wife works with children with special needs and has done for the last goodness knows how many years, so I have a healthy respect for both her profession and the children she works to help.

My last lens cap solution has been annoying me for the last couple of weeks now so I had to come up with something else and it needed to look good and match the ruddy $270 Luigi half case that I'd splurged on a couple of weeks before.
Here's what I finally came up with. (and it works rather well in practise, too!)

OK, this won't help your images and won't make you a better all round photographer but it does look puuurdy.. :D

My only problem is that when i put my lens caps on the lens after use they MUST be the correct way up and perfectly straight. haha

You're right, it won't help your images, especially when you underexpose them! :p
Should've went all out and done the whole cap.

:D

The moody lighting was applied afterwards. Here's a "brighter" version for the visually impaired: :p

I was going to do the rest of the cap but it would have been a severe pain in the backside so decided against it. :D

:D Lolz who cares what a camera looks like it's just a tool.

$270 for a half case :D

I am autistic. Your lens cap isn't on straight, that would bother me far more than the leather thingy. It drives me nuts with my lenses as the last element rotates so goes on straight, look again and I've managed to set of the focus and it's moved.

Moody my arse, you were wearing night-vision goggles when you ramped down the brightness level.

No pain no gain, and you may as well have finished off that shoe - it's no use to man nor beast in the state you left it.

I thought as much. We have a daughter with CP, OCD comes part & parcel with it. She cannot stand to see a room untidy, which can be great - she tidies her room, her sister's room and the play room daily without being asked :D

Indeed. Everybody is on the autistic spectrum somewhere and the effects of it are all different.
I like things to be orderly (including tidiness, lens cap straight etc,.) but not to an OCD level as I am not obsessed with it and it doesn't impact my life and I can even live with the lens cap not being straight, just that given the choice I would put it on straight.

Well you don't buy an X100 for it's focus speed do you!

Half the people who buy X100's probably do so for the looks of the camera first (I admit to it being a factor when I bought one)

You're right on the OCD thing, we all have a touch of it in some way. One of mine is I cannot stand doors being left open. Always on to the kids about it, drives me nuts. I can't relax until the door in that room is closed.

My missus is terrible for it, I sleep on the side of the bed closest the door, and if she comes to bed after me and leaves the door even slightly ajar, it'll bug me until I get out of bed to close it. I wouldn't sleep.

But that's about it. When it comes to gear, no such thing. I do look after my gear, and do clean it all now and then, but I've stuck lenses into the bag with no caps on  and have been known to drop my bag in muddy puddles and shoot away without so much as wiping the lens free of rain

Little things like that drive some people bonkers :D

I'm now twitching profusely. :D

There is a simple self diagnosis test you can do. Google AQ test or Autism Quotient test. While it's not an absolute diagnosis, nor should it ever be considered as one, it can help you understand your self a bit. It's out of 40 or 50, I forget which. Mid teens is considered normal over 30 is "autistic traits". I score 34 ish. To low is also bad, I think it means you're sociopath or something!

But anyway, gears nice isn't it (seeing as this is an equipment thread).

Isn't that a fine sight. A camera in a leather case. Used to be that nearly all cameras had leather cases.

Personally, I love it. I used to keep my Leica M6 in this exact case and it just takes me back. Somehow it's just more enjoyable to shoot with when it's wrapped in a good quality, handmade half case.

I hit around 34 too and while there are bad sides to it (poor social interaction being the main one) there are also good sides, especially for certain jobs (objective non-emotional thinking and saying what is needed without having concept it may be misplaced!)

OCD is a different matter all together and is a mental condition that can be treated in a lot of cases (with root causes behind it) whereas autism cannot as it is a genetic thing. Saying that, once you accept what your issues are with your autism you can consciously improve but it is hard and never goes away.

Very true. But at the same time I've had some massive arguments due to it also. I used to be much worse but over the years I've learnt to deal with it better to the point I have to explain myself at times as its no longer obvious.

While OCD is a separate disorder that's entirely separate its also a nice easy to understand label for obsessive or compulsive behaviour. This is a trait some autistics suffer, including me about certain things, and its easy to just say OCD as that will be understood.

I suppose because autistic spectrum disorders covers quite a lot so what's true for one person may not be for another.

I have a Fuji XF-1 which looks (IMO) best in the tan leather(ette) finish, so that's the colour I bought. With the matching leather case. Soon after buying the camera, I bought another XF, this time with a growler on the front but its leather is what Jaguar calls charcoal, a very dark grey. Guess who had to change his camera case to match his car...

Maybe we can get a little autistic meeting going where we can all stand around awkwardly not being able to talk to each other.

It's OCD. Fact!

Now posting grossly underexposed shots that fail to identify the subject is another matter.

Oh! And so is spending that amount of dosh on such a tiny amount of leather.

I scored 22, I found a lot of the questions too vague so a lot of my ticks were down the middle.

So, am I a potential axe-murderer or just normal? [whatver "normal" is] :D

Normal.

I would explain how it works but then people taking it would be able to bias it how they choose to.

I could see when doing it how you could sway the score one way or the other, some of the questions are very obvious. You just have to be honest, not think about the outcome, like any of these tests.

You bias it by not being honest though, I can get a score of 0 or max score if I want to because I know ho the test works, but if I am honest (or my wife answers for me) I get 34-36 ish depending on the day.

You are in a good range as far as autism goes but that doesn't mean you will not commit mass murder (with axe or any other tool).
You will need to take the psychopath test for that one but you wouldn't accept a bad score from that anyway as your narcissistic disorder will not let you :)

Yes, make a quick instictive decision as to the answer. I scored 19 :cuckoo:

Haha! I scored 7. I was always more the other end though - NOT sociopath! But umm....Imaginative and extremely empathic!

It's only brighter from the light table it's sat on, the lens cap modification is still dark.
I would recommend you adjust the brightness level on your monitor, or better still, calibrate it.
If you look at the histogram for both brighter versions, you'll see they are skewed either towards all highlights or predominantly shadow.

Here's a quick tweak in Aperture.
