Looks like I will be getting a Sony A6000 body only. What prime lens do you recommend for everyday walking about lens? A jack of all trades but a master of none. Just good sharp image quality lens
I used national trust a lot so would be in the building and grounds.

The only issue with the 50 is it's quite long for indoor shots of architecture. To cover that I either use the 16-50 kit which is a decent performer or a Samyang 12mm F2 which is pin sharp and tiny.

Thanks Steve. I do have one eye on the 50mm, just want to hear what others use.

Do you want a zoom or better quality from a prime lens ?

The best 'walk around' lens for the A6000 is the Sony SEL24f18Z https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-SEL24F18Z-AE-E24mm-E-Mount-Camera/dp/B005LLIEO2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462383376&sr=8-1&keywords=zeiss+24mm

Sharp, sharp and beautiful Zeiss colours. This is one of the best lens you can get for the 'E' mount.

I have this lens for my A6000. It is not stabilized but with a moderate wide angle 24mm = 36mm (in 35mm speak) and great quality wide open from f1.8 you do not need anti-shake
Look around, I picked up a pristine copy for £400.00.

Once you start using this lens you soon forget the 'pain' of paying for it.

I also have the Sony 'E' mount SEL35f18 Sony's 35mm (50mm equiv) this is also a very fine lens and is stabilized and cheaper ! but maybe a little too long for a walk around lens ? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-SEL35F18-35mm-Fixed-Mount/dp/B0096W1P5W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462383986&sr=8-1&keywords=sony+sel35f18

I also have the Sony SELP1650 (the kit lens) it is very small, relatively cheap and will do a job but is not in the same class as the other two lens.

The A6000 is capable of superb IQ and is well worth investing in quality.

Have fun.

Thanks Roy. Excellent help (y)

Don't forget the excellent Sigma 30mm - worth £120 of anyone's money. Or the 30mm and 19mm for £240!

The Zeiss 24mm is fantastic but very rare secondhand - I can only recall one on here. And full price is a big hit.

If you only go for 1 prime then go for the 24mm, one of Sony's best primes. As David said, don't come up often secondhand, I got lucky and brought Roy's. If you want something slightly longer then look at the new Sigma 30mm 1.4 which is getting good reviews.

Never been impressed by the 16-50mm, too soft in the corners and the zoom is electric. The 16-70mm f4 is a good lens, if you can live with the electric zoom then also have a look at the 18-105mm f4 which is supposed to be just as good albeit alot bigger.

:plus1: for the sigma 30mm, its the only lens I use on my a6000, it doesn't use the full autofocus points but this hasn't caused me any problems, a bargain price too.

Ah, but you can manually override the zoom, makes it very quick to operate!(-:

Willo said " I got lucky and brought Roy's."

and Roy missed it so much he bought another.

Definitely worth looking into the Sigma offerings. Now that they offer a 2.8 and a 1.4 in the 30mm range.

I had the Sony 18-55, 18, and the 50. I sold them all for the sigma 30 and 60 2.8's.

I was think the 19mm as I was going to get the Sony 50mm. Is the Sigma 30 better than the 19?

The sharpest E Mount Sigma is the 60mm 2.8 - you just have to get used to the odd focal length.

Lightly used examples seem to go for around £100 enabling you to save your pennies for a bit of quality glass.

I had the Sigma 60/2.8 before I swapped it for the Sony 50/1.8. The sigma is very sharp and the af is good but I swapped it for the 50 for the wider aperture and built in stabilisation. The AF is also slightly faster on the 50 along with it using all PDAF functions.

Both shots from the Sigma;
