EWA MARINE

Has anyone got any experience of the EWa Marine underwater housings for Dslr's We are of to Egypt in October and I fancy using my Dslr instead of a point and shoot for some snorkelling shots on the reef, I had a great time with the point and shoot last time but would really like a bash with my usual gear.

I've never personally ued the EWA marine kit, but do you really fancy putting yourD300 in a plastic bag? Using a dslr snorkelling is a lot harder than a compact due to you generally needing 2 hands to operate, which when added to your necessity to be very close to your subject, and the bouyency while holding your breath may well result in better pics with a compact

I think you are spot on, i'm not the best at snorkelling and I want the photography to be a bonus and not a necessity, so I will probably just buy a higher spec compact !!

I used one years ago when I had my old manual focus Pentax MEsuper film camera used it with either my 24mm sigma or 50mm Pentax, the 24mm giving the best results. shot both in a swimming pool and in the sea. This is when was in the scuba club at Uni. Even when you got as much air out as you could it still was boyant which means I would not see it sink if I had let go but also then made it a bit harder to go down (I had to add extra weight to my weight belt. From what I can remember being under water alters the foucs ie things apear closer than they really are also shortens the focal lengh. A bit like a crop sensor so my 24mm was more like 28 or maybe 30mm.

I only used it a few times (not as much as I was planning when I got it) but as I used christmas money to buy it don't feel like it was a waste of cash.

More recently used a hard case underwater housing with an olympus compact which worked well shot raw and had full access to all the controls wasn't diving so don't know what it was like under water.

I now just use a Panasonic FT-1 for when I am in my kayak or canoing fits in my bouancy aid pocket and produces some lovely photos,

The ewa marine bags have no real leakage issues, so as counter intuitive as it may seem I wouldmt worry about putting your camera in one - there are some useage issues but they tend to be at scuba depths and not snorkelling. As above your p and s may be easier to use
