No
So its a bit of long story but essentially my driving licence expired. The DVLA requested i update my photo, which I did online, however I didnt realise they had rejected the photo. I updated it with a new photo the day before my licence expired yesterday, 6/7.
So they have accepted my new photo and upon checking with the DVLA it says it is valid from 7/7/2026-6/7/2036 however the only physical licence I have is my expired one and it could take up to two weeks to receive the new one.
Does anyone know if I am legally allowed to drive? I know online my licence is valid but from what I've read if I get stopped and dont have it with me I may have to produce it within 7 days at a police station which may not be possible if I still havent received it from the DVLA.

You should be OK checks are usually done online now.

From the horse's mouth...

Showing your driving documents

If a police officer asks you to, you must be able to show:

  • your driving licence
  • a valid insurance certificate
  • a valid MOT certificate (if your vehicle needs one)

If you do not have the documents with you at the time, you may be asked to take them to a police station within 7 days.

Take a screenshot of what the website says; also you can download a licence validity document which is sometimes needed by foreign hire car companies.

Ah I didn’t realise that.
Realistically it shouldn’t matter, I’ve only been pulled over once in 14 years but Sod’s Law it will happen when I don’t have one to hand!

The last time I was asked to show my driving licence was in 1976. Where does the time go?

Don't give them reason to want to see it. ;)

Good idea about the LVD Lindsay, I'll have to remember that.

You should be OK if your licence has not been invalidated for any reason. My driving licence was cancelled for Three months after I had a mini stroke. At the end of 3 months I reapplied for my licence but it was another 3 months before it was issued.

No it’s not been invalidated. Technically I have one, just not physically

You should be fine under Section 88 of The Road Traffic Act 1988.

Expired driving licence

But I recommend you check with the DVLA as they can make it difficult.

I relied on section 88 for 6 months after my last licence expired.

They do the driving licence, Insurance & MOT over the radio now. I've never seen anyone get a producer for a driving licence or MOT or Insurance for years now. The ANPR system will flag straight away if there is no Insurance or MOT, then they will pull you over ask your name DOB and check the Driving Licence on the P.N.C.
