Explain wifi cameras to me

I'm not so bothered about using it remotely.

So many questions....

If I'd just taken a picture of the kids (for example) in the garden. Are you saying that I could post it straight to facebook from the camera ?

Could I send to my flickr ?

Do I have to be in range of my wifi ?

What about on holiday etc ?
 
You can create a wifi connection from the camera, your smartphone can connect to that and you can send pictures from the camera to the phone - then using 3g/4 send the picture from your smartphone to Facebook/Flickr. If you're just using your camera then you'll need to find a wifi connection.

Edit : Just to expand, some cameras can allow your smartphone to stay connected even when shooting, so you can have you phone in your pocket and every shot you take will get sent to the phone. This will kill the battery on the camera very quickly, my NEX5 only gets 200 shoots when its constantly connected.

Just like your smartphone can only connect to your wifi when it's in range, you'll only be able send images when you're in range of a router and connected to it. Not sure about other manufacturers but with Canon you have to sign up to their gateway service and enter all your details for facebook etc. So when you're uploading pics, it goes from camera to router to canon to facebook/flickr etc. At least that's my understanding. Personally I wouldn't trust canon with such stuff and would prefer to edit images first. At the mo, I use the wifi feature to remotely take photos using my iphone.

Thanks folks - that makes sense.

I've given my phone (iphone 4s) to my daughter on a sim and given my upgrade (5s to my wife) as I have my work phone for calls and ipad for in house use.

If we get a compact for family use I (without a clever phone) just wanted to make sure I could send snaps to social.

Sounds like at home via my home hub will be ok
 
The camera can only get directly to the internet if it is in range of an internet connected wi-fi network. Be that your phone, your home wi-fi or the free wi-fi in starbucks. The camera itself does not have a 3g data connection, which is what would be required to upload direct to the internet whilst in the middle of a field without any other equipment.

I think that's what I was struggling to get my head around.

Home wifi will do the job for 90% of the instant social stuff.
