Explaining Flash

Can some direct me to a good site to learn more about flash?

I'm looking at off camera flash and going 'errrr...'

Do I need TTL? How do I use it? If I don't have TTL what difference does it make? Etc?

1000D (hoping to upgrade to a 40D).

General outdoor portrait work, maybe some studio work, some gigs and general playing!

i think most people on here would say no flash for gig work (ruins the atmosphere). try a search on youtube for (strobist) lots of info there. i find the strobist web site a bit heavy, everybody,s got loads of flashes loads of triggers etc etc depends how much you want to spend really hth mike.
