Hi
Just about to purchase a 10 stop ND filter. By what number do
I have to multiply an exposure time by to get a correct exposure with the filter? Is there an actual number or is it more trial and error?

10 stop filter kinda gives it away ;-)

Expose without the filter, note the shutter speed and go down by 10 stops. Depending how your camera is set up, it will either be 1/3 stops, half stops or full stops. Not sure if the D90 allows to set to full stops, but if it does, it might be easier as then you can just click the wheel 10 times from your original exposure.

Not all 10 stop filters are true 10 stops either due to manufactring constraints, so you may find you need to use EC to add or subtract a few 1/3rds of stops to get a proper correct exposure.

Easiest way is to use a chart, or if 1/30s or less you can just count the clicks on the camera - if your camera is set up to change shutter speed in 1/3stop increments then count 30 clicks of the wheel.

Can you not meter the exposure with the filter on? Or is that a no-no?
I've never used one, im just curious.

No, too dark.

Another link here to Tutorial section.

I have copied a chart into iPhone. As someone has already said, some filters may vary slightly from 10 stop, but it's a good enough start point.
