Exposure with a DSLR

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but I never really thought about this until I bought my DSLR last week.

Having used a bridge camera for the last 2 years, when taking a shot, usually shooting in aperture or shutter mode I could use the viewfinder which would display a histogram and with the shoot button depressed halfway, it would show some kind of exposure preview on screen, going dark or blowing out depending on exposure

With the 40d, I am again using aperture or shutter (and shooting in RAW) but aside from letting the camera take control of the other side of things, I'm not quite sure what the camera is doing until I've taken the shot and reviewed it back. Is there something I'm missing? Is it something that comes with experience?

i get as shot preview on my C765...along with the results of the +/-
its not a bridge shape but sounds like has the same guts

sounds like a good feature one would want and expect on a big camera i looked at a panasonic G1 yesterday and it had exposure preview button...this is the type of thing i think you need be searching for on that body??

what bridge cam did you use

Hi Rob

Dial to M, pick the shutter speed and aperture you need, then adjust your ISO to to center you needle, it's a little more complicated but a good starting point.

Review a picture in your LCD then press info button twice and you get your histogram, don't press again and it will show by default.

There is a site I found quite a while ago http://www.goingmanual.com/photo/ well worth a read even if you stick with AV.

Hope this is what you were after.

Steve
