I used a Kenko Pro200 DGX 1.4x with a 100-400 on a 550D, 7D, 5D2 and 3 and all have retained a decent speed and accurate AF. It also reports the aperture correctly on the camera body while the AF performs.
I picked the Kenko as it was compatible with most of my lenses whereas the Canon converter was only compatible with the 100-400. I've got a Canon MkIII 2x converter as well but I only ever use my Canon 70-200 f2.8 MkII lens with it. The Canon MkIII 1.4x converter is an excellent with the 100-400 on a 1D body as well, just about 3 times the price.
