Extension Tube

I have a 24-105L Canon lens, and I want to improve the close focussing distance, if I fit an auto extension tube will this have the desired effect? Ishouldn`t affect the quality either should it?

it will but it'll also give you a shallower depth of field and reduce the light hitting the sensor (approx 1 stop per 36mm of extension)

And you won't be able to focus to infinity any more.

I use a tube on my 500mm quite a lot for small birds.

If I understand you right, you want to reduce the minimum focal distance of your lens which is 45cm's by moving the lens further away from the camera body with the addition of an extension tube.

Additional Magnification = (Extension Tube Length)/(Lens Focal Length)

Remember that not only is minimum focus distance reduced, but maximum focus distance is reduced as well when using the Extension Tube.
