Yes
anyone had any experience with using their canon 17-55 IS lens and extension tubes and if the results were any good.

The problem you will find with the 17-55 is the relatively short working distance when used with extension tubes. All this means is that the subject will only be a few inches from the front of your lens.

This can cause problems with lighting, particularly if you are using flash as the lens, being so close, can cast a shadow which is not what you want.

thanks i did think it woudn't be a suitable combination

Wouldn't have thought the 17-55 was really intended as a macro lens at all? I find that a manual prime is much nicer to use for close up macro work- and wouldn't want to risk bumping the front element of such an expensive lens on an object as close as it would be with tubes on!

The pictures are great but as topcatproduction said, you would not want to risk bumping the front element. I'm using my 50mm 1.8 II with the extension tubes and still produces sharp images.
