Extension Tubes + Macro Lens

I've recently bought a Tamron 90mm macro lens and I'm considering getting some extension tubes to use with it as well. How do they work with macro lenses, would I get more magnification or more/less working distance etc. Thanks for any help

They work the same with all lenses. Increased magnification and reduced working distance. The focal plane is reduced and if using AF that is also slower.

I used mine with my 60mm macro.

Mike didn't use extension tubes but a teleconvertor.

I used both ... a 1.7x TC and a 31mm tube

He says a teleconverter and a macro tube, is that something different then? Cheers

The TC gives a little extra working distance and added magnification while the tube allows me to get closer. You would probably get the same magnification with no TC and a full set of tubes, but obviously you will need to get a lot closer to the subject.

Cheers Mike, some had mention more working distance to me but I must have got the wrong end of the stick, they must have been talking about a teleconvertor.

Mike, using the teleconverter looks like a useful addition. Can I ask what one you used ?

lovely fly pic :)
think your ment todo macro lens > tc > extension tube > camera if your using all of them,

It depends what you want the tc to do. As you've described it, it will increase the focal length of the lens but if you use lens > tube > tc > camera then it will increase the effect of the tube.

So have I got this right?

Tubes=higher magnification but shorter working distance

Tubes+tele converter=higher magnification with longer working distance.

Thanks!

Depends on the order. If the tc is used behind the tubes then it just acts as more tube. If it's in front then it will give a longer working distance but not necessarily more magnification. It's one of those confusing things you need to experiment with to find what suits your needs. And I'm running away on holiday before anyone can say I'm talking through my bottom.
