Hi,
I have the nikon 60mm 2.8 and i want to get closer, this is a new area for me, i see a few people using extension tubes. What i would like to know are these any good? also would i have to get nikon one's or a cheap set as i see they range from £6.99 to £119.

any info would be great. :D

The really cheap ones don't have electrical contacts, so you'll only be able to use the lens wide open. And f/2.8 + extension tubes means a very, very shallow depth of field! But it's a great, and very cheap entry into macro, and will give you an idea of if you want to spend the £100 for a set of expensive tubes which will allow you to control the lens from the body.

so you'll only be able to use the lens wide open.

With a Canon setup, it's posible to circumvent this problem by putting the lens directly on the body, selecting the required aperture, pressing the DOF preview putting and removing the lens in this state. I suspect the same trick might work on Nikon gear too.

the cheap ones cant autofocus but the £100 ones can.

AF is not routinely used in macro photography so it's not a big issue.

9/10 I manually focus with extension tubes moving camera backwards and forwards.

The ones without an electrical connection do not stop down and have to be run wide open unless they can be tricked into staying stopped down.

I did read something about using older lenses with manual aperture controls, can anybody recommend which lenses to use?

I'm sure any old Nikon 50mm with an aperture dial will be perfect for the job! There must be an old manual f/1.8 that would fit the bill perfectly?

Edit: Just had a look, I'm not a Nikon person so I'm not entirely sure, but would this work? It has an aperture dial, but I don't know if it's an older fitting or not. Might be just what you're after!
