Hi

New too photography and the site but very keen to learn more. I apoligise if i,v posted in the wrong section. I own a d60 and a nikon 60mm macro lens, i thought that i was getting close. But have noticed some amazing pic,s really close and they have used extension tube/s.
I know this has probably been asked and answered lots and sorry to ask again.Would somebody mind explaining what and how you use them or even a link? I would love to know more.

You mount them on the body, you mount the lens on the tubes and now you have two options:
1. use the focusing ring to focus
2. set the focusing ring to the closest distance and sway to and away from the subject until you have it in focus

I got mine (for less than $10 from Hong Kong) just last week, but I'm pretty sure it works that way, I've tried it.

TIP: if the lens you use has a manual aperture ring, make good use of it.
 
i gather you have to do everything in manual as the lens is on the end of a tube?

If you get auto tubes you will retain aperture / focusing control from the body which is important for macro as you need to use smaller apertures to get a useful DOF. Also remember when shooting macro adjusting the focus point changes the magnification.

I'd recommend using a flash as you lose a few stops of light with the more extension tubes you add on and you want to be around f10-16 to have a DOF like this

which is pretty tiny even at f13
 
Amazing!!!:) , so what lens was on the end of the tubes?
Would my macro get me even closer than it doe,s now?

Sigma 105mm macro - you current lens will give 1:1 (life size) and with tubes you'll get around 2:1 twice life size.

just ordered a cheap set of rings fleabay, too see how i get on i would have loved the auto but at around £80 might have to wait for santa:lol:

After ordering the cheap set the wife said i could order the kenko af.:)
Can,t wait for them too turn up!!
