Cheap ones no autofocus and manual aperture

Expensive ones give autofocus and aperture.

Simple as :D
 
Im looking to get one to have macro capability on my lenses rather than buying an expensive dedicated macro lens.

Is it recommended to go with one that has AF and manual aperature?

What is manual aperature?

The cheap ones my be difficult to remove some say. There was a thread on here some time ago about a chap who used some fleabay tubes and ended up sending his camera off to get the tubes removed:thumbsdown:
 
I like my Kenko ones, although I wouldn't use AF much, a lot better with manual focus. If you do go down the road of Kenko - One Stop Digital seems to be the cheapest (ships from HK - mine only took 4 or 5 days).

Cheap ebay tubes are a pain to use as you cannot control the lens aperture from the camera body, so everything is shot wide open giving minimal DOF, if you want to enjoy using them get some auto tubes which start at about £50 on the evil bay.

Manual aperture is where you set the lens aperture using a aperture ring on the lens.

Yes but its still a pain in the ass.... set aperture wide open to focus, otherwise you cant see the subject, then just before pressing the shutter step down to f11-f16 without losing focus or the bug flying away then press the shutter and hope for the best

Mine went in the bin after a week ;) waste of time , effort and money.
 
Get the Jessops ones if you find them. They AF and meter correctly like the Kenkos AND they work with both EF and EF-s lenses.

I have these and they work great with any lens-body combination I tried them with + they cost half of what the Kenkos do.

Taken with the Canon 300mm + 1.4x Teleconverter + all 3 Jessops Tubes (12mm, 24mm, 36mm)

There is another issue with most cheep tubes, they are made of cheep plastic that flakes every time you put them on and take them off. This flake will see itself into the body of your camera and may easily fall on to your sensor. Another issue, if you ask me!
 
Thanks for the replies, sounds like Kenko tubes would be a good option!
Now to find them at the cheapest price:)
