Extension tubes

I have a post somewhere pretty recent with tubes on the 50mm works a treat. Unfortunately on phone so can't post link lol.

Cheap way to get into macro togging :)
 
Yes, extension tubes will work with either of those lenses and yes, they will be cheaper than a dedicated macro lens.

Don't get the very cheap ones that don't have electrical contacts. You need the electrical contacts to control the aperture. A set of three cost between £40-130 depending on what make you go for and where you buy from.
 
They're just a set a bellows with a mount on each end, on a rail to allow precise setting of the distance between the mounts.

Exactly the same principal as extension tubes, but you can control the magnification.

I wouldn't recommend it for OP though, bellows are more specialised for tripod work and have no electrical contacts, so require aperture to be set on the lens, something which is not possible on native EF mount lenses (without using the dismount while holding DoF preview technique).

Extension tubes are less flexible, but much easier to work with as you can get them with electrical contacts.
 
i`ve just got a set of kenko extension tubes and they work really well.

They now make bellows with contacts via ribbon connectors. I will go find them and post a link. However, lots of money and I would agree that tubes are best to start. Until the bug kicks in ... then get divorced, pay the CSA, move into a bedsit in the worst part of town, work two jobs .... and then your ready to go for it :lol:

Kenko do some good extension tubes!! They have do two versions, one with electrical contacts and one with out, i managed to pick up a set of nikon electrical contact for £30 off ebay the other month!

Aha, that makes sense.
I did wander about that when I posted, I would have expected someone to make something like that by now, but I googled it and couldn't find anything.

However, if you want a tube with more control, have a look at this:

I haven't seen any user reviews yet though. Build quality would be my concern with this, if the extension mechanism isn't well built it could suffer from creeping when pointed up or down.
