Currently i use this cheap extension tube i bought on ebay. I think they cheap for a reason. I sometimes wonder if its worth the cumbersome process considering that i lose out on AF and aperture control. Tried te rverse ring, which i think is a slightly better opion.

Interested in knowing if there are better options ( of couse othe than using macro lens). How about kenko with electrical contacts? Or polaroids which is half the kenko price? Any used them?

Any thoughts?
 
The Polaroid is supposed to be good. They are airily basic things and I think the kenko is a bt overpriced.

Kenko are your best bet personally, but depends what you want to pay. I would do abit more research on the web as to the feedback of people that have used both, the kenko ones have always been highly recommended, never heard of anyone using polaroid, or the alternative is buy a macro lens.

Yep I'll get that info for you. Take a look at my fb page "Phil young photography", there is an album called macro - most of that.

Tbh though all it will do is allow you to see the quality of the lens it's paired with (in most situations it's my 18-55mm) but some are the 50mm. Anyhow they are great and autofocus with anything that's 1:3 or less is quite fast.
 
Kenko auto tubes are good , metal mount and retain aperture control from the body, for macro you want to use manual focus for best results. Tubes paired with a prime lens for best results.
 
Just to clarify: I wasn't saying use AF in macro, it doesn't work, but to drop down the minimum focus distance in lenses until 1:3 the AF works fine.

I use auto tubes because I don't have aperture rings thus want to be able to see what I'm taking photos of.
 
@Phil: i checked out your fb page. The macro pics are pretty good. Seems better than the ones i used, as the DOF is good. When using these tubes, what do you do for the lighting? I aske this since i found trouble with flash light being blocked by the tubes/lens.
 
If you think mine are good check out dogfish's, you'll be blown away!

My lighting isn't that good, it's just an off cam flash unmodified.

The DOF isn't about the qualify of the tubes, it's about the sensor/distance/aperture & focal length.
 
Yes i understand DOF is not a function of tubes. But definitely with tubes that have electrical contacts you can control the dof..

Let me check out dogfish pics as well. Do i search it on fb?
 
Your pictures on fb are really nice. Curious to know what lenses do u use and the camera make? You use PS for editing?

@Paul: how could i take a look at your macro shots? Do you kenko tubes for all your macro?

I tend to use tubes with my macro lens when i want a bit more magnification, here's one taken with a Canon 85mm f1.8 and tubes

Thanks for the compliment, it depends on what I'm shooting but generally speaking my current set up is Nikon D7000,18-55mm, 55-200mm & 50mm 1.8g

My equipment isn't the most expensive or the best but I'd like to think I know how to use it to get the best results :)

For my PP I use Photoshop CS6, lightroom 4 & photomatix.
