I have just googled Kenko and they are £110 in places, thats cheap.

Just off out with the 25mm on my 120-400 to try out.
 
You can't beat a set of extension tubes for macro work - they also work perfectly with other lenses including kit lenses:


Taken on a Canon 450D and a 20mm extension tube connected to the 18-55mm IS USM kit lens.

I use Kenko DG AF tubes which retain all the auto functions of the camera.

For quite a lot of Macro work they are a great substitute for a dedicated macro lens.

I ordered the Kenko tubes from Amazon (CamerakingUK) arrived next day...

High quality construction, af preserved, very happy :-)

Need to play with them now :-)
 
To be honest and this will upset many, I see no reason to spend hundreds on a close up lens.

Just use goot tubes.
 
These are on a Macro lens....

Certainly there's many ways to skin a cat Jeremy and the results may be similar on the face of it.....possibly a little lacking in some respects though.

Another money saving tip.....Don't bother investing in one of these

Try laying on your hand till its numb....

Feels like someone else's then....

Still no substitute for the real thing.....
 
I could do the same coin shot with a standard Canon 28-135 lens and tube not using an additional expensive close up lens. Mind you the flower is unshap all over whereas the other photo of coins with a "kit lens" is incredibly sharp.

So the point would be ?

As for the picture comparison sorry, must be too technical for me! If that is supposed to be a parallel between close up lens or not, it is as off beat as a bike taking you as many places as acer, but cheaper. A pointless argument as each have their merits.

and as for this "Try laying on your hand till its numb....Feels like someone else's then....Still no substitute for the real thing..... Duh! sorry.

Bob, surely you have noticed before that Jeremy has had his funny bone removed.
 
I'm with Jeremy on this, if you occasionally take the odd close up/macro shot then the tubes are a great addition to your kit.
 
I'm sure tubes are great, but not necessarily if you're using the lens as an occasional macro whilst also using it as your walkabout....

Walkabout on a country estate wanting to take photos of the estate whilst also taking closeups of insects. Yes, it is possible - the Canon 100mm L IS makes it so ;)
