External battery pack tip

Having just swapped an SB900 for an SB800 & external battery pack I gave it its first outing at my Wedding yesterday - all worked well and the increased recycle time was ace :thumbs:

The tip then...

DON'T keep the battery pack on your person when you put the camera/flash combo down and walk off :nono:

Yep - dragged the lot off a bench onto the floor (actually grass on this occasion as we were outside) :eek::eek::eek:

Obviously being Nikon though it all just bounced and works fine - phew :)

So basically, yes these things are a good & useful idea, but please fasten them wherever possible to the camera to make one-unit

Canon users would obviously be looking for new gear now :D

I have a suspicion or two, but I'd like to know your reasons.

I did this with a wireless transmitter fixed to my belt... except I pulled the camera onto a hard floor, bust the mount on camera and lens and ended up with a £500 repair bill!! :eek::bonk:

The SB900 is too big for a couple of the softboxes I have, it's not as powerful and that bloody thermal cut-out is a real PITY :bang:

Ouch - second top tip then - if you're going to do something this stupid, do it over a soft surface :D

I am liking the SB900 but my lambdency defusers don't fit it :D It does become a bit of a weight lifting session with a D700, grip, 24-70, flash and battery pack :lol: Did you have to dig your camera out of the hole it no doubt dug for itself when it fell on the grass?

It certainly gouged out a fair bit of turf & mud as it landed lenshood first - but nothing hit the lens' glass and all else was ok - it just needs a wash now :D
