Having just swapped an SB900 for an SB800 & external battery pack I gave it its first outing at my Wedding yesterday - all worked well and the increased recycle time was ace 
The tip then...
DON'T keep the battery pack on your person when you put the camera/flash combo down and walk off :nono:
Yep - dragged the lot off a bench onto the floor (actually grass on this occasion as we were outside)


Obviously being Nikon though it all just bounced and works fine - phew
So basically, yes these things are a good & useful idea, but please fasten them wherever possible to the camera to make one-unit
Canon users would obviously be looking for new gear now
