I would like to get an external flash for my Canon 450D, hotshoe. Don't want to spend a lot but want one i can use for nice portrait shots of my daughter which would give me better results than the pop up flash that comes with the camera.

Any ideas as to what i should look for? Would have to buy new as not allowed in For Sale section. Thanks

Jessops do one for about £90, but is often reduced to about £60.

Also the Yong NUo's aren't bad.

If you wanted used you could try Ebay, but then that is ebay....

I would lilke it to have a swivel head so that i can point it upwards

I thin kth ejessops one swivels

The nissin one gets good reviews... Photoplus Canon edition has a review in it this month of all the various options....

just make sure you check with em that it works with your model,i cant see it on the web link,i had one 12 months ago for 1000d,sold that went back for one for my 50d,luckily the guy checked, told me it doesn't do full ettl on 50d

I can quite happily second that, as I've got an i866 and it's a cracking bit of kit.

The i622 comes in at £105 odd and is the equivalent of the 430X, but with one caveat; it's fine if you are going to use it on camera or with a cord but it has been known in the past to have issues with remote triggering (this may have been fixed with a firmware update, but I don't know tbh).

If you need it for off camera use later then you are probably better off going for at least a 430 @ £200 ish, or better the 866 at £230.

Photoplus is probably worth a read to give you a decent run down on the options, but be aware that their reviews are very heavily cost based.

OK let get the first thing out the way buy a CANON, yes there are compatibles and yes some look very good indeed, but you want one that you KNOW will work with your camera and the next one you upgrade too, and will give true and full ETTL settings (exposure).

Canon Speedlite 270EX Don't bother a waste of your money £96.50
Canon Speedlite 430EX II Excellent and will do the job well. £179.00
Canon Speedlite 580EX II Top of the range all the bells and whistles, but top money too. £329.00

For me it would all depend on how much of a wrench spending £300+ on a flash would be.
All my friends have the 430 and are more than happy with it, but I'm a buy once type of guy, I'm only ever going to need one speed-light for the type of stuff I do, so I bought the best a 580EX II.

Now if I do want a multi flash set-up in the future, I could borrow a mates 480 as my 580 has the master trigger built in.

I've had no remote triggering issues with my Di622, though I have been using ettl and not radio triggers.

If your on a budget then the Nissin Di 622, if you can afford more then the Canon 430 EX2.
If bouncing the flash for portraits use the pull out catch light panel on the Di622, it works and adds to the shot.

Another vote for the Nissin Di622.
I bought 2 for less than 1 Canon flash.

I also bought Nissin Di622 and for £100 I am very impressed with it
