External Hard Drive Brands

I've had a look through the previous posts about external hard drives and there's one thing that I can't seem to find:
Are there any brands which I should keep away from, or any particular recommendations?
I'm looking at getting a 500Gb or 1Tb external drive to store all my media on, which will be connected to be router (BT homehub) to allow wireless access from all my laptops. I'm not using this as my backup but I would obviously like it to be as reliable as possible.
...and there's no need to start discussing RAID in this thread :nono:;)
Thanks.

I'm using a Western Digital 1GB and it's been fine. £60ish from Amazon.

Any of the main brands should be fine.

avoid STORA from netgear - I had one and sent it back as it was terrible. Buffalo do some good stuff, although I have one of their 1TB RAIDs attached to my one and only desktop so don't use the network.

everyone has horror stories about certain brands.

ive had issues with maxtor, lacie, WD... maxtor have a particularly bad rep though.

otherwise i use seagate and samsung, however im sure some will come along and say theyve had issues. theyre cheaply made mass produced mechanical devices at the end of the day. just remember to buy 2 and keep your data on both to keep it safe.

got Samsung from Currys .....seems well made

I've been using a Samsung 1TB from Ebuyer for about a year. Its still working fine.
I would get a 2TB next time though, 1TB isn't enough !

I have 4 Buffalo external hard-drives all working ok so far. 3 are less than 1 year old.

I bought my most recent, a 2Tb from Amazon £84.98. This is JUST a hard-drive for storage so no fancy network or backup software included, but not a bad price for 2Tb.

I also have Lacie & Freecom hard-drives which are quite a few years old but working fine, now just used to retrieve the occasional archived images.

No matter what make anyone mentions, someone will have a horror story to tell.

Chris.

I've just taken delivery of a 500gb WD portable and at £63 delivered it's a bargain. I have a couple of other WD drives and they seem fine.

I've had WD, Seagate, Hitachi [previously IBM as well], Maxtor, Lacie, and Freecom over a number of years. I've had failures in every brand. Maxtor has been the worst - many failures here, and I'll never buy another at any price. I'm running Samsungs at the moment, the oldest being 2 or 3 years and no problems.
